The Swansea and District Branch of Cats Protection has been in existence since 1998. Our main aim as a charity is to rescue stray and unwanted cats and kittens, rehabilitate and re-home them where possible, to encourage the neutering of all cats and kittens and to inform the public on the care of cats and kittens.
Last year we found homes for 267 cats and kittens and neutered in excess of 500 cats.
During the last 2 years there has been a sharp decline in the number of cats and kittens being adopted, whilst there has been a big increase in the number of cats and kittens being abandoned, mainly due to the recession.
One of the main reasons for the surge in numbers of cats needing to be re-homed is the increasing number of owners moving into rented accommodation where cats are not permitted.
There are still a large number of abandoned females giving birth to kittens in people’s garden sheds and greenhouses. It is essential to handle these kittens when they are very young or they will become feral. We are always looking for smallholdings that will take these cats as mousers.
We keep most of our rescued cats at Kenwood Kennels and Cattery, Llanmorlais. The owners and team there are very supportive of us. We are currently full to capacity with a VERY long list of cats waiting to come in.
All our cats are neutered if old enough, vaccinated against cat ‘flu and enteritis, micro chipped and treated for worms and fleas.
We also have ‘foster homes’ and would welcome any new potential fosterers, particularly during the kitten season which is at its height during the summer.
