The Bay Magazine - October 2011
Hello again
Autumn is upon us, the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness as Keats so aptly observed. Well I don’t know if we are in for mists but there has been a distinct nip in the air recently and I don’t think our summer wardrobes are going to get an airing for a while – unless you are off to sunnier climes.
Bryher Connection
Liz Barry brings us the second part of her trip to the Scilly Isles – she left us very enigmatically in July with a promise to tell us about the Swansea connection she made on her visit to one of the smaller islands – Bryher.
Northern Lights
Liz had also had one trip on her to do list that she managed to cross off this year - a trip to the frozen north to see the Aurora Borealis. Many people make the trip but don’t manage to witness this phenomenon – but Liz was one of the lucky ones!.
Photographic Competition
It can’t have escaped your notice that here at TheBay we love our photographs – in fact one of the comments we like hearing best of all is how much you all enjoy the magazine for its fabulous pictures. So it’s over to you! We want you to enter our photo competition and send in your best images that convey the message – The Bay. It could be anything from a picture of Swansea Bay or Botany Bay to an image of a bay tree, bay window or a bottle of Bay Rum – it’s up to you.
Ashley’s Walks
John Ashley’s walk of the month takes in the coastline around Oxwich Point – those of you that know this walk will also be aware of the killer steps. Whichever way you approach them your knees will take the strain – or maybe it’s just mine that creak under this sort of pressure! Those of you who have enjoyed John’s walks over the past two years will be pleased to know that we have finally put them into a book – Ashley’s Walks. Hurrah I hear you say – we have had many emails and letters on the subject so know that it will be a welcome addition to your collection. Published just in time for Christmas, we are taking orders for it now.
Healthy Eating
We’ve been trialling another healthy eating gadget in TheBay kitchen this month. The Tefal Vitacuisine cooks with steam allowing you to prepare virtually fat free meals in less than half an hour. I have to own up to having added a delicious knob of salty Welsh butter to the potatoes once the photograph was taken! Sam has also prepared a healthy simple starter this month, king prawns with crab, mango and apple
Christmas Cards
Back by popular demand are TheBay Christmas cards. There are now 8 beautifully illustrated local scenes available in sets at £10 per set.
Christmas Gifts
Our wine stig has come up with a great Welsh inspired gift idea for a wine lover. Chateau du Seuil is a vineyard in the Graves region of Bordeaux which is owned by Nichola and Sean Watts who originate from Wales. So proud are they of their Welsh connection that they have put a Welsh dragon on the label! If you decide to order a bottle or two, do mention that you saw it in TheBay!
Enjoy the autumnal colours and we’ll see you again when winter will be well and truly on its way.
