A man for all seasons
Paul Gill, surfer, explorer, shaper, photographer “The Gill” as he is fondly referred to is one of the most well-known characters in British surfing.
A true eccentric, Paul was born in Liverpool nearly 60 years ago and has spent most of his adult life living in Swansea immersed in the surfing lifestyle.
As well as being a lifelong surfer/explorer, Paul is recognised as one of the most knowledgeable people when it comes to British surf spots, having travelled extensively for years seeking out unknown breaks the length and breadth of the country. In fact Paul was the first person to surf the world famous break of Thurso East in Scotland (as featured in last month’s TheBAY) as well as discovering many other classic breaks around the UK.
Paul has been making surfboards for over 30 years for various surfboard labels and has shaped for some of the UK’s top performers. He famously once shaped a board for the iconic Californian 60’s surfing superstar Micky Dora!
As if all this wasn’t enough, he even found the time to document his passion through the lens of his camera to such a level that he is widely regarded as one of Britain’s top surf photographers. Here are a few examples of his work!!
Nb. Paul has recently started shaping under his own label “Gillboard” which are being exclusively sold through Guts surfboards in Bishopston.
