Heronston Hotel and Spa

Bridgend

In pursuit of happiness

Friday 20th March will be memorable to me for several reasons. Firstly, we had the opportunity to view the first partial solar eclipse of this century, secondly it was International Day of Happiness and thirdly – well read on and you’ll discover the third reason.

Never judge a book by its cover is an old adage that fits perfectly with the Best Western Heronston Hotel and Spa in Bridgend. Its exterior may be rather dull but once through the front door and into the reception area it is a very different story.

The hotel has undergone refurbishment on a grand scale and now offers its guests luxury accommodation. Our superior double room had views over the courtyard garden. The bed was super king size and could have comfortably accommodated a family of four.

Being a spa hotel it has, of course, a swimming pool. Herons Leisure Club’s swimming pool has subtle mood lighting with a twinkly ceiling. No nasty stark, clinical lights to show off all your body imperfections! The spa has everything you could wish for; spa pool, sauna, steam room and a fully equipped gym. Herons also has a salon that will cater for all your beauty and spa treatments.

After a relaxing soak in the spa pool and a splash around in the swimming pool there was just enough time for a drink in the bar before dinner in Crane restaurant.

The dinner, bed and breakfast package that we were on included a two course meal from the table d’hote menu. Welsh lamb, fresh fish and a delicately flavoured mushroom risotto all featured on the menu which appeared to focus on locally sourced produce.

Along with the usual pate and soup starters was a seafood croquette. Soft potato, fish and prawns coated in a crisp breadcrumb shell served with a piquant tartar sauce that had the addition of crunchy slivers of gherkin. I continued with a fishy theme with my main course of fillet of hake on crushed new potatoes, which was spanking fresh, firm and perfectly cooked.

After a good night’s sleep we enjoyed a full Welsh breakfast before checking out.

What was special about this Best Western hotel?

Without a doubt it was the staff. From the moment we stepped through the door every single member of the team was cheerful, smiling and very obviously happy in their job. Deanne who gave me my manicure was charming, funny and naturally engaging. Both receptionists that we met were attentive and happy to answer our questions, as were the bar and restaurant staff.

So the third thing that will make 20 March 2015 memorable is that it would appear that every day is International Day of Happiness at the Heronston Hotel and Spa!
