IT DOESN’T SEEM POSSIBLE THAT IT IS THIRTEEN YEARS SINCE WILL YOUNG WON THE INAUGURAL SERIES OF POP IDOL. BADGER HAS SELECTED YOUNG’S LOVE REVOLUTION AS HIS ALBUM OF THE MONTH, AND LISTENING TO THIS CD IT’S NOT DIFFICULT TO SEE WHY HE WAS THE WINNER IN 2002
I Just Want a Lover, sang Will Young on a song of that name in 2011. Four years on, ‘our Will’ has come up with another blinder of an album. This time around the song content is a bit more powerful in feeling.
He’s been there, done that, and definitely worn the T Shirt. That said, there’s not much to make us feel super proud or happy or anything but remark-ably miserable, but when Will sings, the angels nod in approval at the very fact he has a phenomenal voice. Quiet, softening tones are delivered with such accuracy that sometimes you have to listen to the songs over and over again to remind your-self what the lyrical content is. It’s a reminder of how good Young can be (and how much he has influenced Sam Smith). There are happy moments like the R and B beauty of Love Revolution, and a nod to the Latin sounds of U Think I’m Sexy and of course the amazing ballads. All round it’s a winner, you don’t need to be a fan to enjoy – not of Will Young, just of great music.
