Connor and the Cliffhanger
Connor Griffiths bags a silver medal at the European surfing champs!
In a stunning turn of events, the Swansea surfer went from being a late replacement for the Welsh team heading to the Euro surf championships in Casablanca, to coming home with a stunning second place silver medal.
In largely challenging conditions, Connor had to battle through five rounds of stiff competition to reach the grand final where he was joined by the French, Spanish and Moroccan champions. For most of the 25 minute final, he was in last place, having not found a solid score. To add insult to injury, the French competitor then dropped a perfect 10 point ride to pull ahead of the other finalists.
With about five minutes to go Connor bagged a midrange score to put himself in 3rd and a place on the podium but he still needed a near seven point ride to better his position. With less than a minute to go, it seemed like the positions were to stay the same. With no decent waves on the horizon, it was a done deal.
However, with the commentator counting down the last few seconds to the end of the heat, Connor saw a wave with potential and paddled like mad to seize his opportunity with just two seconds to go. He put everything into this last ditch effort and pulled out his best wave of the final. There were a tense couple of minutes while the judges deliberated over the score but eventually they announced it as a 6.68 which just got him into second.
Talk about leaving it ‘til the last minute.
Congratulations Connor on a stunning result.
