THE SWIGG

Bay TemplateI was heartened to find a new addition to the food and drink scene, in the Maritime Quarter, bang opposite the Helwick Lightship. It’s called The Swigg but it has nothing to do with the adjective to swig but refers to the South West Inner Green Grounds buoy situated in the harbour.

The Swigg is part restaurant/bar and part delicatessen, and serves breakfast and brunch from 7:00 to 10:30. Whether you’re looking for a healthy bowl of granola with yoghurt and fruit or a brioche roll filled with thick cut Gower bacon, you’ll start the day with a smile on your face.

I popped in for a sun-downer on one of the warm evenings last month, and was pleasantly surprised to find that the forward thinking owner offered plenty of comfortable outdoor sofas to sit on while soaking up the last of the sun’s rays. What better way to end a busy day, than with a glass of something chilled and a bowl of salt and pepper cashews?

Next time I go along I am going to try one of their sharing platters – they offer a Welsh artisan cheese board, French cheese board, Greek style mezze or a charcuterie selection – my only difficulty is deciding which one to choose.

Another thing that caught my eye was the range of artisan breads on offer – and as they sell all the cheeses and meats on offer on the menu I have earmarked The Swigg as a place to pick up the makings of a picnic that I can take down onto the beach.

BRYNMILL Coffee House

Bay TemplateThere must be many readers who remember when there was a cafe opposite the entrance to Singleton Park in Brynmill Lane. The windows were always steamed up and the coffee was weak and milky. Fast forward 40 years and we again have a coffee shop to pop into when walking between Singleton and Brynmill parks. The Brynmill Coffeehouse is a much smarter place than its predecessor and the coffee is infinitely better. Here is the place to find sustenance when you’ve completed a circuit of the boating lake, a slice of homemade cake or a brownie, or a hearty bowl of soup all freshly prepared on the premises.
