Editor Lesley Williams shares details of some of her favourite local shops

Azure

Each month I trot down Newton Road dropping off magazines to our regular advertisers and so it was on one of these jaunts that I discovered a little bit of heaven. Azure is a silk lover’s paradise. Step over the threshold and you enter a kaleidoscope of colour.

Editors Choice pic 1 AzureOwner Sophie Tudor gave up a life on the sunny Cote D’Azur for the love of a Welshman – he must be good I hear you cry – to trade the French Riviera for Mumbles.

Sophie designs and manufactures her pure silk fabrics, and then has garments and scarves made to her specification. Her fabrics are luxurious and her cut is generous, from simple floaty chiffon jackets that would suit all shapes and sizes to wispy ponchos that can be worn belted as a blouse or even looped around your neck like a scarf. The patterns range from hot pinks in Pucci inspired swirls to delicately embroidered white silk – you really do need to go in to appreciate the variety.

On a recent trip to Barcelona I discovered and fell in love with a local brand called Desigual – you cannot believe how excited I was to find that Azure stocks a great range of their colourful dresses, tops and fabulous bags. No longer will I have to trek to Cardiff for my Desigual fix.

Sophie is big on fair trade and British made too. I found some gorgeous bags and coats by an Edinburgh based company called Ness – the attention to detail is superb – check out the puffin fabric used to line a navy spotted jacket.

Azure’s pure silk scarves are a snip at £18 and what’s more, they are generous enough to use to cover your shoulders if, like me, you want to hide your arms in sleeveless summer frocks.

What a welcome addition Azure is to the Mumbles shopping scene.

Sew SweetWilliam

I have recently returned to knitting and sewing. I used to do a lot when my daughter was little – there weren’t many kids in her class with hand smocked summer dresses. With the arrival of our first grandchild last year, I resurrected my creativity and once again took up my knitting needles and dusted off my sewing machine. I discovered an Aladdin’s cave of knit-ting yarn in Swansea Bay Yarns in St Helen’s Avenue and Lee Mill’s range of fabric really does take your breath away, so when I spotted So Sweet William on Gower Road in Killay I had to hot-foot it there to take a peek.

Owner Sarah, stocks a small range of very beautiful fabrics, sewing patterns and haberdashery. Sarah runs craft and sewing classes where you can learn to make a cushion, bunting or simple children’s clothes. For mums-to-be, Sarah has a fab idea for the baby shower. Get together with your friends and family and stitch a patchwork square – at the end of the session the squares are all joined together to make a quilt or other keepsake. Take along your cake etc. and Sarah provides the tea and coffee. For just £25 per head which includes all the materials and invitations to send out, it really is a sweet idea.

Sarah has a memory-box project for you to com-plete this summer. It’s the perfect memento to make with the kids on a rainy afternoon!
