There is a clear north south divide when it comes to Tripadvisor ratings for pubs and restaurants on the Gower Peninsula. TripAdvisor®, the world’s largest travel site, provides the opportunity for consumers to give honest, unbiased and unedited feedback based on service, location, atmosphere, quality of food and overall experience. This feedback clearly demonstrates that north Gower pubs and restaurants significantly outperform their southern competitors. Four of the top five eateries are in the north and within a radius of only about 1 mile of each other: the Welcome to town, Britannia Inn, Greyhound Inn & Fairy Hill; the other, the Plough & Harrow, which comes in at number two, is in Murton.
The Welcome to town, the Plough & Harrow and the Britannia, the top three in the list, have all received a TripAdvisor® Certificate of Excellence and all have a very similar formula: they have a fully functioning bar area, a separate eating area and they have great chefs using fresh ingredients producing outstanding food. The Welcome to town, which describes itself as a fine country pub, tops the list. It has a contemporary bar area and a rather splendid dining room; the Welcome to town serves reasonably sized “pub menu” a more selective “dining menu” and a good selection of constantly changing specials. And this is reflected by both the Plough & Harrow and the Britannia Inn. The Brit has a small, recently refurbished, bar area with a separate modern restaurant similar in layout to the Plough & Harrow. The pair are not overburdened with very long bar menus and both boast a specialised restaurant menu.
Natasha Crowther, owner of the Welcome to town, said “North Gower is a less fashionable destination when compared to South Gower and we know we have to really excel to make people want to come and visit us. Then, once people are here in North Gower, there are three or four really great places to eat, so we have to excel again – it pushes all of us to keep striving for excellence in customer service and food quality. I’m delighted the TripAdvisor reviews recognise that”.
But is there really a north south divide?
