Below the showroom is the home of Paulus Quiros Handmade Steel Bicycles. Paulus Quiros has had a spectacular rise to prominence since its origins in 2009. Dr Jonathan Paulus, a medical doctor at Singleton hospital who also studied Motor Sport Engineering in Swansea, joined forces with Jose Quiros, a skilled crafts-man with many years of engineering experience. Their innovative concept has been to combine state-of-the art engineering and traditional craftsmanship, alongside elegant designs and precision build quality. The result? A stainless steel masterpiece that received critical acclaim at the inaugural UK Handmade Bike Show in 2011 and show stopping status at the NEC bike show in Birmingham.
Paulus Quiros’ award-winning bikes have been featured in magazines and books all over the world and their customer base extends as far afield as Canada and Australia. They were chosen by bicycle tubing manufacturer Reynolds to make the first lugged bicycle frame with their new 921 tubing, a star of the UK Handmade Bike Show at the London Olympic Velodrome.
If building beautiful bikes wasn’t enough, their engineering reputation has caught the attention of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, who invited them to provide a guest lecture concerning the engineering of bicycles earlier this year.
“Ultimately we aim to make beautiful bikes, that fit the rider and handle excellently” says Jonathan “there is no substitute for precision engineering and attention to detail”.
Such is the love for steel bicycles that Paulus Quiros have also been in high demand to restore cherished old steel frames;
“Since moving to Swansea we have been taken aback by the number of repairs and restorations to classic steel bikes that we have done. There is clearly a hidden treasure trove of lovely steel bikes just waiting for a new lease of life”.
Located at the top of the tower in one of the most unusual bike fit studios in the country, motion capture analysis and laser measuring are combined with panoramic views over the marina. Dr Paulus has trained at the Serotta International Cycling Institute (SICI) in America and is one of the very few fitters in the UK to have completed the SICI Advanced Cycle Fit program.
As local cyclists themselves, supporting cycling in the area is important to the Pilot House Cycles team.
