The Swansea Festival of Stitch will be bursting into life for two weeks this August.
The Festival will run from the 10th to 24th August. The aim of the Festival is to encourage all age groups and all abilities to enjoy the incredibly varied range of textile art that is available. The Swansea Bay area is alive with textile groups and they will be show-casing their diverse work under the Festival’s Banner Theme for 2018 – The Sea. The City Council is supporting the Festival with the exhibitions being held in the Civic Centre, Swansea Museum and the Grand Theatre and others will be in Tapestri – a restaurant, the Dragon Hotel, the Beach Hut Cafe and the National Waterfront Museum of Wales and the Environment Centre.
Over 30 local schools will be taking part in the festival with their own creative input in the form of decorated deckchairs displayed along Mumbles Pier and in the grounds around Swansea Museum. Swansea will also be ex- periencing it’s first ‘yarnbombing’ event. The city’s knitters and crocheteers are busy making lots of decorative sea themed pieces which will be adorning the Mumbles Pier complex, it promises to be quite a sight!
On the weekend, 18th and 19th August, the city will be buzzing with textile activities. In the city centre there will be a marquee hosting a ‘Shop of Skills’ offering free book on the day sessions for both adults and children in a wide range of textile skills from Tunisian crochet to badge-making, free-machine embroidery techniques to traditional hand embroidery. There will be the first Welsh Quilt Expo, showing traditional Welsh quilts, traditional and contemporary art quilts at Swansea Leisure Centre. Our Makers and Traders Market focusing on unique Welsh products, materials, gorgeous accessories and clothing will be held within the National Waterfront Museum of Wales.
Throughout the two weeks of the Festival there are Masterclass sessions being held at Swansea Museum. This is a chance to learn with internationally renowned tutors, and there have already been bookings from the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand so Swansea is most definitely on the map as a destination for keen textile enthusiasts.
All the exhibitions in the Festival are FREE, and there is no charge to enter the Quilt Expo and Makers and Traders Markets. So please do come along and enjoy this exciting Festival in Swansea this August.
