The show is a traditional, one-day event set in one of the finest locations for such an event in the country. If you enjoy the countryside, or are looking for a different, fun-filled family day out, you and your family will really enjoy the show – it’s an event not to be missed.
A full programme of displays and events will take place throughout the day. This year, we are delighted to welcome for the first time Meirion Owen’s Quack Pack which features hilarious duck herding demonstrations. The Quack Pack team of border collies and comical Indian Runner ducks provide entertaining, educational and interactive displays allowing hands-on adult and child participation combined with Merion’s own humorous commentary as he guides the dogs and the cooperative (and sometimes uncooperative) ducks around a course that includes tunnels, slides and pens.
Also a welcome return to the show is the Rockwood Dog Display Team delivering great family fun by taking the audience through every aspect of dog training from obedience performed to music, dogs jumping through 10inch hoops, agility, fly ball and active Man Work where a dog is seen to apprehend an armed criminal.
Keeping with the doggie theme, back by popular demand is the Little Nipper’s Terrier Racing who will be showing off their fast paced, hilarious, high action antics. You can also have a go at the racing fun with your very own dog. If that sounds too energetic, there is always the novelty dog show, with classes open to all breeds, whatever shape and size with a rosette for every entrant.
And once again, we have been very lucky to have a display of one of the show’s favourite attractions – the classic and elegant Shire horses – and visitors have the amazing opportunity of looking at these gentle giants close-up.
Following on from the success of the past two years, we have again extended our exhibition of traditional country crafts and skills, and the opportunity to talk to people who keep these old traditional skills alive. These are just some of the events planned; and there’s a lot more happening at the showground throughout the day.
The Gower Agricultural Show is very much a traditional agricultural event; it is a chance to see that farming is still so very important to our area. There is a fantastic livestock section with many different breeds of cattle, sheep and pigs all competing in their different classes, and it is a chance to get a really close look at some of the finest examples of livestock.
And let’s not forget, horses of all breeds, large and small, will be showing in the main horse ring too. The competition rings will be full all day, with competitors hoping that this year, they will win the ultimate title in their section of “Gower Show Supreme Champion 2018.”
Other displays and exhibits will be housed in marquees all around the parkland. There will be the dramatic, artistic flower arranging in the Horticulture marquee, and a chance to compare cooking skills in the Cookery tent. In the Honey tent, you can even get dressed up and have a look at a working bee hive. If shopping takes your fancy, there are plenty of local arts and crafts available to purchase from a carefully selected range of trade stands with unique products, not seen in the High Street. Growing in popularity is the fine selection of local food that is available to taste and buy. Then when your feet are feeling tired, why not join our local WI ladies in their refreshment tent for a welcome cuppa and a home cooked slice of cake!
Come along and join in, and celebrate the countryside at Penrice Castle Park on Gower Show Day.
