The Sunday Times Wales Independent Secondary School of the Year 2019

Education with St Michael's School

Consistency and quality in education continues to be vitally important, at a time of great change nationally. St. Michael’s School focuses on providing this stability and forward thinking, both in children’s academic development and their wellbeing. The school offers a professional, independent counselling service which is open to all pupils and along with a range of other initiatives, they are very keen to ensure that welfare and wellbeing supports effective learning.

Last summer saw yet another increase in the school’s A* & A grades at A-Level, up to 61% from 57% the previous year. The A* to B proportion has also gone up from 80% to 88.5% this year. These results, which took St. Michael’s into the UK Top 30 of all co-ed independent schools, were entirely down to the hard work of the students. The school also won the Sunday Times’ award of Welsh Independent Secondary School of the Year, in recognition of its success.

A great deal of the students’ success is down to quality teaching, but also ongoing assessment which builds an accurate picture of each pupil’s abilities, whilst enabling the school to report to parents on the precise progress their children are making. Again, these reports have to be accurate – there should be no surprises later on or grade inflation in the lower years, which is misleading and makes it harder to acknowledge and fill gaps in learning and skills.

Although a school’s website and prospectus are helpful, every child has slightly different requirements for their education and therefore the school enjoys meeting prospective pupils in order to highlight exactly why they will benefit from joining us. Therefore, to get a true appreciation for St. Michael’s, the character of the pupils and all the opportunities on offer, arranging a personal tour is highly recommended.

We continue to be highly sought after for a well-rounded education and as a school, are of a large enough size to provide a wide range of opportunities to children yet small enough to know everyone individually. At this time of year, places are filling up especially quickly and we have waiting lists for some years. Enquire as soon as possible if you are interested in a place for September.
