Pest of the month – WASP

With Mark Millar - Swansea Pest Control

In the UK you’re most likely to come across the Common Wasp (Vespula Vulgaris) and German Wasps (Vespula Germanica). Both species are yellow and black striped and have painful stings that can cause allergic reactions.

Queen wasps emerge and start working on new nests in the spring, as the weather gets warmer.

By the summer months, wasps are working overtime, with up to 300 eggs being produced every day and up to 5,000 adults feeding grubs and building the nest structure.

If you see a large number of wasps in and around your home, there’s probably a wasp nest or a substantial attractant nearby. (We strongly advise not to approach an active wasp nest and let us survey the nest for you – our site surveys are FREE of charge).

Wasp nests come in many different shapes and sizes. They’re amazing pieces of architecture that can contain up to 5,000 wasps during peak activity in late summer.

They build their nest using chewed wood and saliva to make a papier-mâché material. The nest material is durable, lightweight and surprisingly waterproof. You may notice wasps stripping fence panels and sheds etc.

Every nest is unique and shares characteristics with other colonies of the same species. Nests can be found in lofts, walls, soffit boarding, outbuildings, around decking, earth bedding and hanging from branches. In early spring, you might encounter a wasp nest the size of a golf ball, this would suggest it contains only the solitary queen wasp and maybe a few workers.

As the summer goes on, a wasp nest can contain thousands of wasps and easily get to the size of one square foot plus, if not treated.

At Swansea Pest Control we carry out a site survey to locate the activity and then a risk assessment before we begin treatment. We use an insecticidal dust which is applied around the nest entrance. This dust is then carried into the nest and eradicates any activity within 24 hours. Once activity has ceased we can remove the treated nest (as long as the nest is accessible) if required, for an additional charge.

Once the treatment has been carried out every customer receives a report with a COSHH safety data sheet for the insecticide used.

  • We have a 100% success rate of eradicating every nest we treat
  • We operate from 8am – 10pm 7 days a week during the wasp season
  • Please note we treat wasp and bee nests (bee swarm removal can be arranged)
  • £35.00 per nest price for postcodes SA1 – SA4 only (other areas incur an additional charge)
