Antoinette Milne is back this month with some of her wine recommendations that are available to buy from our local wine merchants. This month Antoinette looks at some of the vegan and vegetarian options on offer – I no longer have to choose my wine based on the attractiveness of the label.
SEPTEMBER HAS ARRIVED. IT’S BACK TO SCHOOL AND BACK TO WORK. TO HELP BRIGHTEN THINGS UP, HERE ARE A FEW PLAYFUL AND GREAT VALUE WINES!
More of us are becoming concerned about whether wines are organic, vegetarian, vegan and environmentally sustainable. Vegan/Vegetarian wines are wines where the fining agents (to fine or clear the wine) used are vegan/vegetarian friendly. Organic wines are wines where the grapes used have been organically farmed (no herbicides, pesticides or fungicides are used).
Dylans Wine Merchants
Stellar is one of South Africa’s largest organic wine producers and is also one of the leading ethical wine brands in the UK. Legend has it that the vineyards are patrolled by Runner ducks who work as natural pest removers! Dig This is full bodied with soft, ripe blackberry fruit along with some hints of spice. A feel-good wine.
RED – ARROGANT FROG SHIRAZ (CROAK ROTIE) 2017 (Languedoc, France) £8.49 *Vegan
Cheers Wine Merchants
A fantastically fun Shiraz with a playful take! It isn’t from the region of Cote Rotie (where wines can cost more than 5 times the price) however it isn’t short on flavour. With ripe blackberry fruit, savoury and sweet spices, toasty oak and black liquorice, it’s well worth a try!
RED – BARBERA DA VINE 2018, Araldica (Piemonte, Italy) £7.95 *Vegetarian, *Vegan
ND John Wine Merchants
An eye-catching label inspired by vintage bomber art of the 1950’s. Made from the Barbera grape variety, this is light and juicy with tangy red cherry and a refreshing finish. A perfect pizza and pasta wine or enjoy lightly chilled on its own.

Mumbles Fine Wines
Premium quality Chenin Blanc generally hasn’t hit the big time with Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio dominating the headlines. It is however, a truly versatile grape variety with the capability to be amongst the finest white wines in the world. Here in South Africa, The Big Easy Chenin Blanc promises a richly textured wine with the pure fruit of apricots, pineapple and granny smith apple. It’s lively, concentrated and exciting. Fabulous on its own or with rich, creamy dishes.
WHITE – ONNA XARELLO 2017, Ramon Canals (Penedes, Spain) £13.99 *Organic, *Vegan
Fine Wines Direct UK
Onna is a creation from the winery of family owned Ramon Canals who also produce premium quality Cava.
A beautifully designed label stands up equally to this expressive home-grown grape variety, Xarello (also used in many Cavas). Onna Xarello is dry and light with refreshing peach and tropical fruit flavours. Easy to drink and perfect on its own or with light fish dishes.
