Mellow Fruitfulness

Wine recommendations with Antoinette Milne

When John Keats wrote his poem To Autumn, he captured a feeling of contentment, which is exactly what we will feel when we try some of Antoinette’s recommendations for October.

Autumn is well and truly here. To help make the seasonal transition a little smoother, we have discovered some bold, generous and rich flavoured wines and spirits. Just add a warm fire.

WELSH WHISKY PENDERYN ICONS OF WALES #7

RHIANNON 70cl 46% (Wales)

£45.00 ND John Wine Merchants

Brand new and 7th in the “Icon of Wales” series which celebrates Rhiannon “a powerful enchantress and horse goddess from the ancient Welsh folk tales, The Mabinogi”. Here is a Penderyn tasting note excerpt: “Smooth velvety sweetness; creamy caramel, figs, red berries, delicate frangipane, chocolate ganache and a touch of coffee.” I’m in.

WHITE WINE

THE PEACH CHENIN BLANC VIOGNIER 2018 (Stellenbosch, South Africa)

£9.50 Dylans Wine

Chenin Blanc and Viognier make perfect partners here. Ripe and mouth filling flavours of fresh peach along with a soft and lingering finish mean that this is an ideal wine for sipping on its own.

RED WINE

DOPPIO PASSO SALENTO PRIMITIVO 2018 (Puglia, Italy)

£9.95 Cheers Wine Merchants

Primitivo typically produces full and rich wines and the Doppio Passo is no exception.

A portion of the grapes have been left on the vine after the initial harvest so that they become very ripe. With this long “hang” time in the vineyard, the grapes become concentrated and offer bold and generous ripe flavours of blackberry and cherry along with dark chocolate. Now where is that fire to sit in front of?

RED

EL VINCULO CRIANZA 2012, Grupo Pesquera (La Mancha, Spain)

£14.99 Fine Wines Direct UK (Cardiff)

100% Tempranillo from a perfectly ripe vintage. Aged for 18 months in American oak. As with all wines from Pesquera, El Vinculo is unfiltered and unfined (so there may be sediment). Weighty and powerful with rich, ripe fruit and cedar spice, then a warm, lingering finish. Incredible value.

PORT

GRAHAM’S SIX GRAPES RESERVE PORT (Portugal)

£15.99 Mumbles Fine Wines

Six Grapes is like a young Graham’s Vintage Port in style; “full bodied with rich black fruit and fragrant blackberry aromas.” It is an accessible Port for Port appreciators offering freshness and a luxurious feel. Ready to drink at room temperature or even a bit cooler (12-16 degrees C).
