Christmas sorted in Ystradgynlais

With Bay editor Lesley Williams

Just a little way up the A4067 from Swansea is the busy little town of Ystradgynlais, which bucks the current trend with a thriving business community.

When I last visited a back in 2016, I was amazed to find that many shops were closed on a Saturday afternoon – thankfully all that has changed. And that’s not all. There’s a new butcher’s shop at 12 Station Road, Mark Griffiths Family Butchers where you will find people queuing out the door on a Saturday morning, picking up their Sunday joint. They are taking orders for turkeys and other prime cuts for Christmas.

It is good to see that a business that had just opened last time I was there, has gone from strength to strength and is now firmly established on Station Road.

Pethau Plant is the go-to shop for children’s clothing; with brands such as Mayoral, Emile et Rose, Hatley, Kite and Lily & Sid – there is something to suit all styles and budgets.

A new addition to Ystradgynlais is Blwm Flowers. Owner Katie uses seasonal blooms to create floral de-signs that are fresh and on-trend. I’m sure her new col-lection of festive wreaths and table centres will decorate many a home this Christmas.

And staying on the subject of flora, The Old School Nursery has everything you’re likely to need for your garden, from hanging bask-ets to bedding plants – they specialise in Mediterranean plants, pots and planters – what a fab Christmas gift – a beautiful planted pot for the front door step.

On the subject of Christmas shopping Cofion Cynnes is the place to go for Welsh themed gifts. You’ll find jewellery hand-made in Wales from the Carrie Elspeth range to Clogau Gold – all at sensible prices. The range of gifts in this little shop is really quite amazing – it truly is an Aladdin’s cave.

Lastly my tour around Ystradgynlais took me to the Kindle House where I love to browse through the rails of exquisite clothing from makers such as Yaya, a Dutch brand that I haven’t found anywhere else. This shop has to be seen to be believed. Here you’ll find room after room of gift ideas for absolutely every member of the family, as well as things to decorate your home.

My final destination was Kindle House, infamous for its Christmas Wonderland, five rooms all themed with gifts and decorations. My personal favourite is the clothing & jewellery depart-ment on the first floor because I just love the fashion label Yaya and the Spanish jewellery brand Uno de 50. Kindle House have an extensive offering, take a peek at www.kindlehouse.co.uk to see what they offer. Last year they won ‘Best Christmas Window in Great Britain,’ they will be revealing this year’s window at the launch of Christmas from 14th – 17th November 2019.

The local Facebook page is entitled ‘Ystradgynlais – Be Surprised, Discover’ which just about sums it up.

So, there you have it, Christmas sorted in Ystradgynlais!
