Q: I love Animojis – they’re so much fun. But why can’t I record a video with them? There’s no option in the Camera app for that. Is there a workaround?

A: Animojis are quite fun and they’re a great way to waste a little time with your iPhone X or above. But you’re right, there’s a puzzling restriction which makes absolutely no sense: if the technology is there, why restrict it in this way?

Even weirder, there’s actually a workaround without having to download any app or do some convoluted trickery. All you have to do is go to Messages.

From there, as you know, you can access your camera by tapping on the camera icon lower left of the interface. This is how you usually take a quick photo or video to send to whoever you’re texting.

But there’s an addition to the camera interface if you invoke the camera in this one: you get an ‘effect’ button from which you can select your favourite Animoji. Hit the record button, and you can make a short film with your Animoji instead of your (or anyone else’s) head.

Now the one thing you need to remember is once you’ve finished recording, don’t tap on the large blue arrow lower right of the interface, as that will send the video to its recipient. Instead, tap on ‘Done’, top right. This will embed the video in a text which you can then delete by tapping on its ‘x’. But don’t worry: your video isn’t lost as it’s been automatically saved to your photo library.

Granted, it’s a bit of a pain, but if you want to record yourself in any setting wearing an Animoji, that’s the way to do it 😀
