Wine recommendations with Antoinette Milne

Apart from happily receiving wine, a few other gift suggestions that wine lovers may appreciate this time of year include wine decanters, wine glasses, gift sets and WSET (Wine & Spirit Education Trust) Wine and WSET Spirit qualification vouchers. Sharing magnums

(1.5 litre bottles) and even larger bottles of Champagne and whites and reds can give extra joy and pleasure, so they are well worth seeking out.

Independent wine merchants know their wines and are very happy to listen to your needs and advise. They keep track of what wines are drinking particularly well and offer great value. Speak to them and get the inside track. This is where the indies really come into their own and where you can certainly benefit.

Barbadillo is a key producer in Jerez and has a reputation for producing out-standing Sherry. Oloroso is a style that is achieved by oxidative ageing through the criaderas y solera system, a system of fractional blending (younger wines with older wines) in old American oak barrels called butts. The Barbadillo Oloroso (made from the Palomino Fino grape variety) is dry and rich with flavours of dried figs and prunes joined up with a warm, toasted nuttiness. A versatile fortified wine at 18% abv that will work well with red meats, game dishes, mushroom dishes and creamy cheeses. Best served between 12-14 degrees C either as an aperitif, with food or after dinner. Incredible value for an aged fortified wine.
