March a month of celebrations

Wine recommendations with Antoinette Milne

We’ve got St. David’s Day, Mother’s Day and the beginning of British Summer to celebrate this month of March! To help get into the Welsh spirit of things, Mumbles Welsh Dry Gin may be just the place to start. For Mother’s Day, a beautifully crafted sparkling wine from the Penedes beckons. And for those warm, sunny, relaxing days, a newly released orange wine and a fairly muscular red wine for those anticipated barbecues completes the set.

Beautifully fresh and crisp, Vilarnau is a blend of the 3 native grape varietals, Macabeo, Parellada and Xarel-lo. Delicate aromas and flavours of green apples and pears linger alongside a persistent, silky mousse. The bottle is decorated in a mosaic fashion, from the modernist artistic movement in Catalonia which used fragments of broken ceramic tiles. Wine and art united in a bottle!

JOSH SCOTT BLA BLA BLA 2018 ORANGE WINE £16.99 Marlborough, New Zealand

Vegan, unfined, unfiltered so sediment may be present

Orange wine is a term used to describe white wines where the juice has been left in contact with the skins for a period of time (treated as a red wine at this stage). This gives an orange-like colour to the wine along with more intense aromas/flavours, noticeable tannin, more texture and weight. In this case, the lovely orange colour comes from extended skin contact of white and red grapes. Made from a blend of 5 grapes, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Beautifully textured with aromas and flavours of ripe apricot, pear, straw-berries and a streak of herbal spice. Finishes dry. An alternative to rose? Chill, open, sip, bla, bla, bla…

This is a powerful and intense red wine. The grapes come from the very best plots of an organically certified vineyard in Terra Alta in north-eastern Spain. Carinena (Carignan) contributes colour and acidity to the blend and Garnacha (Grenache) gives body, spiciness and soft fruit. The Garnacha vines are almost 50 years old and this means the grapes have great concentration of flavours. Ripe, spicy blackberry fruit enhanced by 10 months in new oak barrels means this wine is in a bold mood. A perfect wine for those that particularly admire flavourful and distinct red wines.
