February Wine recommendations

With Antoinette Milne - Wine for Life Learning

We’re celebrating February this month (and the gentle approach of spring) with a natural approach. As many of us have become more resourceful and have ditched what isn’t essential, it seems fitting to have a similar approach to wines we drink. All the wines below are made from grapes that have been grown organically (without the use of herbicides, pesticides or fungicides). The vine growing season beckons (in the Northern hemisphere anyway) and natural is the way forward!

Wine for life learning’s Online WSET (Wine & Spirit Education Trust) Level 1 and 2 Award in Wines qualifications have sold out with a month to go so we’ve added new dates (see the end of this article)!

WINE FIEND – winefiend.co.uk

CIELLO ROSSO 2019 – £9.49 – *Organic, *Vegan (Sicily, Italy)

Unfiltered and unfined means more flavour, and this bright, light and juicy red is bristling with delicate yet ripe red cherry and blackberry fruit. It’s 100% Nero d’Avola, the native grape of Sicily, which prefers warm climates and the hot Sicilian sun. These vines, however, are above sea level which allows for gentler and extended ripening, adding freshness. Try lightly chilled and on its own or with charcuterie and/or delicate vegetarian dishes. www.winefiend.co.uk/collections/red-wines/products/ciello-rosso

Wine Fiend is a brilliant new company selling wines from smaller producers that have been produced with minimal handling and intervention, are organic and often biodynamic.

Dean, the founder, describes himself as a wine professional with entrepre-neurial spirit, and has been in the trade for longer than he can remember — which he blames on the wine, of course. He has worked with the Wine and Spirit Education Trust, travelling far and wide, studying, sampling and spreading the word of good wine. He was fascinated by the small, sustain-able producers doing something different to the big industry brands. Something exciting, wholesome and unique.

Dean says, “Our goal for Wine Fiend? Easy: we want to shout about extraordinary wine and the passion, dedication and love for land and nature at the heart of it. We celebrate and support the ambitious wine-makers who dare to offer something unique, and share the inspiring stories behind these special wines. Cheers to the creative craftspeople going against the grain, veering away from the industry giants and playing by their own rules.”

CHEERS WINE MERCHANTS www.cheerswinemerchantmerchants.co.uk

*Organic (Penedes, Spain)

Simply delicious and great fun! Made with Trepat, a Catalan red grape variety and Pinot Noir, this pink Cava emboldened with the Gaudi sleeve, is dry with vibrant strawberry and raspberry fruit. Made using the Traditional Method as in Champagne, this stylish sparkling is perfect for sipping solo or with pan-fried prawns. The 2 branded flute glasses complete the set.

MUSAR JEUNE RED 2018 – £13.95

*Organic (Bekaa Valley, Lebanon)

From the iconic wine producer, Chateau Musar, this very approachable and delightful red is very enticing. Their approach to vine tending and winemaking is to work with minimal human interference.

Vines have been cultivated in the Bekaa Valley for thousands of years. The 2018 vintage is a blend of Cinsault, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Richly fruited with a juicy core of black cherry, black-berries and hints of black olives. Unfiltered. Meant to be enjoyed whilst young.

SALADINI PILASTRI FALERIO 2019 – £11.99 or £10.79 Mix 12

*Organic (Marche, Italy)

Falerio is a little known sub-region of Marche, in the centre of Italy. Saladini Pilastri are the wonderful, organic producers and this sublime blend of native grape varieties, Passerina, Pecorino and Trebbiano converge to create compelling flavours of ripe pear, fresh apple and zesty lemon. Dry, fennel scented and with refreshing acidity, it’s perfect on its own or with delicate fish dishes.
