There can’t be many people that haven’t popped into the ironmongers and hardware shop in Eversley Road at some time. During the lock-down last year, there seemed to be a socially distanced queue outside, every time I passed.
It’s a good old-fashioned ironmongers – a bit of an Aladdin’s cave with boxes stacked from floor to ceiling. You’ll find screws and nails, nuts and bolts, compost and fertiliser, electrical plugs and sockets, electrical tools, hammers, saws and screwdrivers and everything in between. Not only can you purchase the tools and equipment for the job, but you’ll find great advice given free of charge – and all with a friendly bit of chat from Wayne, Steve, Gareth and Caroline.
The shop was established more than 90 years ago – we can date this picture (right) to pre-1937 as this is when the trams stopped running. Originally owned by William Davies it was taken over by his son in 1956 and then passed to David Davies in 1970. David has now retired and the business is now owned by Wayne Bainbridge, Steve Hughes and David’s daughter Caroline. The proprietors may have changed but the shop has retained all of its original charm.
Now they have expanded and opened a sister shop across the road, dedicated to all types of paint, wallpaper and decorating tools. Whether you are looking for emulsion for a room makeover or a specialist industrial coating, this is the place to come.
No matter what colour paint you are looking for, W Davies Paints will be able to mix it for you.
If you have a particular colour in mind, simply bring in a sample and with the help of a spectrophotometer a match can be made. This extends to exterior paint too, so if the current trend for painting terraces of houses in pretty pastel shades continues, you won’t be limited to off the shelf colours.
