Tube riding is considered the ultimate manoeuvre in surfing. This is where a surfer positions himself behind the heavy pitching lip of a breaking wave and actually rides inside the space created behind it.
Unfortunately, due to the large continental shelf that surrounds the Welsh coastline that saps the energy needed to create hollow breaking waves, you rarely get the opportunity to ride the tube at home. You generally have to travel abroad to experience this ultimate surfing thrill.
But recently, we snagged a session that was the exception that proves the rule. During one of the last big storms of winter, a local tucked away corner that rarely works, transformed itself from average beach break into the field of dreams for literally 45 minutes and produced some of the best tubes I’ve ever seen in Wales.
