The May Bank Holiday is almost here, accompanied by long, warm, sunny days! We’ve all been waiting for this (some more patiently than others)! There’s a beautifully bottled and summery Prosecco Rose to start, followed by a wonderfully fresh and vibrant Verdejo, then, the one and only, fresh and lively 2020 Allan Scott Pinot Noir Rose, finishing with a wildly approachable and pure Syrah. Happy May and happy summertime!
CONTE PRIULI PROSECCO ROSE ORO 2020 £15.00
This Prosecco Rose will undoubtedly be a very popular one this summer! A pale pink sparkling in a memorable bottle, filled with lively flavours of ripe strawberries and redcurrants. A blend of Glera and Pinot Noir. Fashioned to drink now, it’s bright and delicate flavours mean that it’s perfect on its own or with lightly grilled prawns!
CHEERS WINE MERCHANTS
BODEGAS PIQUERAS WILD FERMENT VERDEJO 2018 £10.95
(Almansa, Spain) Organic, Vegetarian, Vegan
Verdejo is a grape variety that is really coming into its own these days. If you haven’t tried it and you like Sauvignon Blanc, it’s one to taste. Although Almansa is generally a warm/hot region in the summer, these Verdejo grapes are sourced from high altitude, cool vineyards and harvested at night to preserve the freshness of the grapes. Cultivated yeasts are generally used to start fermentation (as they are predictable), however wild yeasts start the ferment here (some say this makes for a more interesting wine). The wine is aged for 2 months in French oak to give it more body, richness and extra flavours such as vanilla and spice. Dry and refreshing with some richness and lively acidity, this is a Verdejo to try on its own or with barbecued chicken. Bodegas Piqueras produce tremendous wines which represent great value.
ALLAN SCOTT PINOT NOIR ROSE 2020 £12.99 BUT MIX 12 ONLY £11.69
(Marlborough, New Zealand)
Allan Scott only makes well-crafted wines and this won-derful rose is no exception. Salmon pink in colour and sporting beautifully ripe strawberry and watermelon fruit. Off-dry to medium dry finish. Delicious on its own!
CARTE BLANCHE SYRAH “Domaine de Castelnau” 2020 £12.00
(Languedoc, France) Organic
What would a summer barbecue be without at least one Syrah at the party? This very approachable Syrah has bright blackberry fruit, some subtle mint and peppery spice.
A wine with great purity and freshness, it’s a trusted companion to burgers and steak as well as a super sipper on its own!
