Ease into Autumn

wine recommendations with Antoinette Milne

September is here, and autumn is right around the corner. Nights are drawing in and the wines and foods we eat tend to reflect the season. Plums, blackberries, pears, apples and figs can feature on the menu this time of year and the wines we choose often tend to be richer. For white wines, we are featuring a riper, fuller style of Pinot Gris (Pinot Grigio) from Alsace and a beautifully textured Viognier from Chile. For red wines, we are championing a Barossa Shiraz from Thorn-Clarke and a little known Nerello Mascalese from Sicily. Wines to equip your ease into autumn!

M&S WINES

M&S Classics Pinot Gris 2019

£10.00 (Alsace, France) *Vegan

Pinot Gris is the same grape as Pinot Grigio, however this wine is a completely different style to the straight-forward Pinot Grigio that many of us know. Due in great part to the unique geography and climate in Alsace, where the Vosges Mountains protect many of the vineyards from rain bearing winds and the summers are sunny and dry, the grapes can easily reach an enviable optimum ripeness. This gives this wine a richness and voluptuousness along with aromas and flavours of green pear, exotic spice and honey. It’s medium dry and unoaked and along with the concentrated fruit, lends itself well to light and medium spiced dishes.

It has been made with minimal treatments so there may be a harmless sediment in the bottle.

CHEERS WINE MERCHANTS

Casa Silva Viognier Reserva

Cuvee 2019 £10.95

(Colchagua, Chile)

Viognier is a grape variety that can easily divide opinion. It tends to be fuller bodied, softer and richer than some of the youthful white wines that are so popular currently. It has enticing aromas of peaches and honeydew melon, orange peel and a hint of honey. It is fresh and full bodied with a rich texture and balancing acidity along with a persistent finish. It lends itself well to more rich and flavourful dishes such as roasted and barbecued chicken or pork. Brilliant on its own as well.

FINE WINES DIRECT UK

Thorn-Clarke Varietal Collection

Shiraz 2018 £10.79 Mix 12

(Barossa, Australia)

Thorn-Clarke has been growing grapes for over 100 years in Barossa and for 6 generations. They take great pride in producing wines that they feel…”truly showcase the best of the Barossa and Eden Valley”. The aromas on this Shiraz are abundant with vibrant red fruits along with subtle hints of French oak. Well balanced tannins are intertwined with flavours of concentrated black cherries, delicious plums and mulberries. It’s a full-bodied style with a plush mouthfeel and persistent flavours.

WINE FIEND

Azienda Agricola Cortese, “Nostru” Nerello Mascalese 2018 £15.00

(Terre Siciliane IGT, Italy)

*Organic, *Vegan

Nerello Mascalese is a red grape variety that grows mostly in Sicily and Sardinia. It is noted for its red berry fruitiness and spiciness. Black and red cherries stand out alongside gentle spice and a subtle savouriness that complements the juicy and fresh fruit. Soft tannins and fresh acidity make this wine so easy to drink and enjoy!
