Q: Hi. I really like the latest Mac operating system [Big Sur – MacOS 11], but I used to like having the volume control in the menu bar. Why has it moved to this new Control Centre, and can I get it out of there?
A: I know what you mean! Sometimes it’s great to have lots of controls grouped together, but if you’re used to having one on its own, it’s really frustrating that it’s not where it used to be. Thankfully, you can fix this.
Take a visit to the System Preferences (you can access that from the Apple Menu, top left), and click on the Dock & Menu Bar icon. You’ll see a sidebar filled with various commands you can add and remove from your menu bar. You even have the option of adding others to the Control Centre, making it even more filled with commands.
In this list, you’ll find ‘Sound’. Just click on ‘Show in Menu Bar’, and it’ll be back right where you expect it! Do take the time to look at your other options, as it’s a great way to coalesce other commands into the Control Centre menu or expand it to populate your Menu Bar with additional commands which you could find useful to always have at hand – let’s just hope they don’t change everything again with Mac OS 12! 😉
