Helping you get the most out of your Mac, iPhone & iPad

Q: You always give us useful tips – but is there any fun stuff on the latest iOS that would entice me to upgrade?

A: This is a really tricky one to answer, especially since ‘fun stuff’ is highly subjective. However, if a free major upgrade to iOS 15 isn’t good enough to entice you (assuming your iPhone is compatible of course), I’m not really sure what to suggest.

As you know, iPhone doesn’t come with ‘fun’ games already installed, but you have access to thousands via the App Store. Same with ‘fun’ apps, yet anything you deem to be ‘fun’ can be downloaded from said App Store.

However, there is one thing I recently discovered which I myself would deem to be fun, and best of all, it’s bundled with your phone, ready to use. It’s called Flyover and you can find it in Maps: Now I’m not sure where they all are, but scroll over to San Francisco and take a look at the Golden Gate Bridge or even Alcatraz. You’ll find a large icon over the landmark. Tap on it, and to the right of Directions is ‘Flyover’. Select it and you’ll be able to move around it as you move your phone. If you find moving yourself or your phone around to be too distracting, tap on ‘Start Tour’ to slowly pan across it instead in an automated hands-off tour.

There’s also another fun feature of Maps: zoom out, and keep zooming out until you have our glorious globe in the palm of your hand. If you know any flat earthers, this will really annoy them!
