It’s April and Spring! Why not celebrate with a few unusual picks? We’ve got two simply delicious white wines, one from Portugal and one from Hungary, both using local grape varieties. An unusual sparkling Gavi and a sensational red Zinfandel from Lodi in California round it all out. Happy April and Happy Easter! Pasg Hapus!

ADEGA CAMOLAS CLO BRANCO 2020 Mix 12 £8.09

(Peninsula of Setubal, Portugal)

“Clo” is a refreshing and vibrant white wine produced in the Setubal Peninsula, south of Lisbon, close to the Arrabida Natural Park. A blend of local grape varieties, Fernao Pires and Moscatel Graudo, it has intense aromas of white flowers, peaches and ripe citrus fruits. The grapes are hand harvested in the early morning to preserve freshness and are vinified in stainless steel vats to retain the purity of fruit. Perfect to drink solo and/or with light salads and fresh seafood.

GAVI SPUMANTE BRUT “LA BATTISTINA” £11.95

(Piemonte, Italy)

We don’t often see sparkling Gavi and so this is something a little off the beaten track. Gavi (as a still wine and in this sparkling) is made from the Cortese grape variety. It has aromas and flavours of ginger, citrus, apple and ripe apricot. The grapes are harvested earlier than the main crop to maintain the fresh acidity for this sparkling wine. Try a new style of sparkling wine this Easter!

(Tokaji, Hungary)

We generally think of Tokaji as being the sweet and gorgeously unctuous wine that it typically is, however here in a dry style, it has so much to offer. With fresh ripe pear, grapefruit, honeysuckle and some apricot, it finishes energetically with much zest. Perfect alone and with cheesy canapes and dishes.

KLINKER BRICK OLD VINE LODI ZINFANDEL 2017 £18.95

(California, USA)

A powerful and voluptuous red wine with aromas and flavours of ripe cherry and raspberry.  A period of barrel fermentation contributes to additional flavours of sweet tobacco and cocoa. Made from old vines which produce concentrated flavours that one could expect. The region of Lodi typically produces some of the most flavourful Zinfandels, usually with accompanying high levels of alcohol and this wine is no different, coming in at a somewhat eye watering 15.5% abv. Works well with summer barbeques.
